Maria at America – 2014
E como sempre pergunto: De que precisa? Or What do You Need?
English Version:
And I ask: What Do You Need?
I read some comments about the poor quality of public education in American Public Schools. What I can say is that the Public School depends on the School District. But there is an option for American children to study for Homeschool or private schools or Charter School. But it is notorious that most American children are enrolled in Public Schools and there are excellent Public Schools.
California ranked the Public School by the Academic Performance Index, the students annually perform the CST – California Standards Test, and international students still hold the CELTD – California English Language Development Test to rank the school.
As I said, in California, generally, Elementary School provides the student class to the 6th grade. The American student will enter Junior High School for the 7th and 8th grades, finishing 9th (Freshman), 10th (Sophomore), 11th (Junior) and 12th (Senior) grades when applying for College (Colleges / Community Colleges) or an University.
The school year usually begins in August and ends in early June (with weekly recesses during holidays). In order to enroll the child in the Public School it is necessary that he / she resides in that District, reason why the better the quality of the Public School more expensive is the value of real estate in the District.
The office provides forms and procedures required for admission, such as a child’s identification document – a passport or a Birth Certificate (if you do not wish to present the passport); Proof of residence (the rent contract, the bill of light, gas, water …); Document of legal guardian with contact information; physical exam; Vaccination record (Tuberculosis test required in California) …
The Dress code information is provided, because children do not wear uniforms. As well information about the Lunch Menu, since American students can buy their lunch at school or take home snacks (depending on where you live the food habits are terrible, with pizza, hamburger, soda …). And also transportation information as it is offered the school bus for the kids. Either the list of materials suggested for the child to take on the first day of class (which is very simpes), because the books are provided by the school during the entire school year.
The physical examination should be completed by a doctor, in a hospital, clinic (private or public), pharmacy (that offers the Medical Care). The Doctor does a simple examination to verify that the child does not present problems of vision, coordination, pains, … and fills the form, then signs and stamps. It also looks at the vaccination card and check if there is any missing vaccine. If there is, the child should take the vaccine, or the form is not released at School.
At Elementary School, students have a single teacher for basic subjects (English, Mathematics, Science and History / Geography-Social Studies), in a single classroom with structure of video projector, TV, … And other support materials. The average number of students per room is 20 to 25 students. At the first open house the teacher’s program is explained and the teacher’s contacts are provided.
The grades are distributed from A to F (lowest academic level), by letters (A, B, C, … not being less than F). Some parents are against the application of these tests, because they find it long, tiring … There is the program of inclusion of English, the well-known English Second Language – ESL, with the accompaniment of the foreign child until it is able to receive all the school content in English.
At Elementary School, children have physical education classes – PE Program, with the same clothing they attend and they only do various physical activities.
In California, 3rd grade students are assessed by the OLSAT (Otis-Lennon School Ability Test) for admission to the Gifted and Talented Education – GATE, program to stimulate students’ leadership, creativity and motivation skills for a High Achievement, Specific Academic Ability in English language Arts, Specific Academic Ability in Mathematics and Intellectual Ability. Later, the parents can request the evaluation for late entry of the student who later joined the school, and foreigners can be evaluated by the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test – NNAT.
Also on 4th grade you have the option of attending the school band, with optional music lessons, up to the 6th grade. The instruments are: flute, sax …
It is important to monitor the various programs offered at the school, as they are distributed to students during the school year and those who are interested participate. The school websites provide all the information and it is an excellent option for participating parents.
There are also several activities supported by the community and parents volunteers – PTA, who request donations, accompaniment in sports activities, participation in dinners in partner restaurants… with a calendar of activities for the entire school year. I loved going to Cupcake with Mom’s and always remembered my husband from Donut with Dad’s, which happened monthly at Elementary School because I interacted with other parents and had information on what was going on.
But there are parents against American Public education, who do not approve of children’s involvement with technology, are opposed to food offered at the School, find the School routine too demanding or too poor …
However, I was surprise the easy access to the Principal, that every day could be found at the arrival of the students, at the parties … and the availability of all the staff at any time that I needed.
